Our carbon emissions reduction plan

Since 2006, we've made accumulative changes to our building and business practices. Each year we've set aside 5% of gross profits to invest in reducing our carbon footprint and environmental impact. Last year

First, we swapped a gas-guzzling BMW for a diesel VW sedan, a Jetta TDI, which averages 6.2L consumption per 100km.

Second, we replaced an old asbestos roof with light-coloured Colorbond roof, water tanks and new guttering to capture rainwater from all buildings. We installed heat-activated ceiling extractors, ceiling insulation and ceiling fans to improve coolness in summer and warmth in winter – less mechanical cooling during in summer and less electrical heating during in winter.

Third, we replaced all hallogen downlights with energy-efficient LEDs, replaced two electric hotwater systems with an Acquarius evacuated tube solar hotwater system, and installed a 3kW solar power system. Since converting to solar in September 2010 we've continuously generated more energy that we use, during summer and winter, and earn energy energy credits with Origin (average $760 per year). We track our daily and accumulative power generation online so we can maximise our generation efficiency, which in Queensland – the sunshine state – is exceptional.

At the current rate of energy use and generation, and taking into consideration savings on energy bills, the solar systems that cost around $10,800 will be paid off in around six years, thanks to the sun.

To help spread the word and enable others to install energy and water-saving measures at work or home, we participate in Alternate Technology Association's Sustainable House Day. Each September, hundreds of sustainable homes around Australia open their doors so others can learn about what's involved and hopefully start their own sustainability journey. As we operate from a home office, our sustainable business practices are proudly on show.
